For years, The Golden Hour has been acclaimed as being one of the most vital components of the post birth experience. Describing the actions between mom and baby that should take place in the first hour after a baby is born.
Skin to skin contact has been recommended and supported by a myriad of researchers and health care providers for years. But I’m here to educate you on the benefits of skin to skin contact even after the golden hour (and dad gets to be involved too!).
Let’s explore the magic of this incredible bonding experience.
Why Skin-to-Skin?
Before we jump into the how-tos, let’s understand why skin-to-skin contact is so important for parents and babies:
Enhances bonding: When your baby feels your skin against theirs, it triggers the release of oxytocin (for mom and baby), the “the love hormone” This builds an unbreakable bond between you two.
Babies who form bonds with their caregivers through skin-to-skin and baby wearing have been shown to cry up to 40% less than babies who don’t.
Regulates temperature: Skin-to-skin contact helps regulate your baby’s body temperature, reducing the risk of hypothermia and overheating.
Boosts immunity: Your skin has an army of good bacteria that gets passed on to your baby during skin-to-skin contact. This helps strengthen their immune system and provides them protection against infections.
Stabilizes heart rate and breathing: The rhythm of your heartbeat and breathing helps regulate your baby’s heart rate and breathing patterns.
How to Embrace Skin-to-Skin
Alright, now that we’re all on board with the amazing benefits, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of how to do this:
Step 1: Find a comfy spot – Choose a cozy nook where you can relax. It could be your favourite chair, your bed, or even a comfy rug on the floor. The key is comfort for both you and your baby.
Step 2: Dress for success – Loosen up! Your baby should be in just a diaper, and you should be in minimal clothing. This way, you’re maximizing skin-to-skin contact. A light blanket can be draped over your little one to keep them warm.
Step 3: Get comfortable and gently place your baby on your bare chest. Make sure their tummy is against you, allowing your skin to touch theirs. Support their head and neck with your hand while they nestle in.
Step 4: Now comes the easy part—just relax and enjoy the beautiful experience. You can softly talk, hum, or sing to your baby. The sound of your voice is incredibly soothing.
Step 5: Skin-to-skin contact is a wonderful ritual right after birth, but it’s beneficial at any age. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day, but remember, every minute counts!
Step 6: Involve the Whole Family Skin-to-skin time isn’t just for parents. Encourage grandparents, siblings, and other caregivers to join in.
In a Nutshell
Skin-to-skin contact is an embrace that works wonders for your little one’s health and development. It’s not just about warmth; it’s about building a foundation of love and connection that will last a lifetime.
Skin-to-skin should be used at any time during your baby’s development, especially during the early days and months. When your baby doesn’t want to settle at night, is teething or even when they come down with their first cold.
